TEXT: “Honour (Thank) the Lord with thy substance, and with the firstfruits of all thine increase” (Prov 3:9 – Emphasis mine)
Let me start by saying that one of the best ways to express thanksgiving to God is through thankful giving. Out of gratitude for what the Lord has done for you, offer to Him your substance as a way of saying thank you. Invest in His work to show that you are grateful for all He has done for you. It is called Thanks-giving; thanks plus giving, not Thanks-saying.
Although, thanksgiving to God certainly includes verbal expression of our appreciation, but the word of God suggests that the practice of thanksgiving should not be limited only to verbal expression. Action should accompany our words because what we do validates what we say. In this month of our thanksgiving to God as a Devotional Family, it is important we think on tangible ways we can let God know we are thankful to Him.
Furthermore, thanking God with your substance or your possession shows that you acknowledge God as the source and the owner of all that you have. It also reveals that you acknowledge yourself as a mere steward or caretaker of His resources. Don’t give thanks to God only with mere words or songs while holding back from Him your wealth or possession.
Remember what Pharaoh told Moses? He told him to go with the people but they should leave their animals and things behind (Exo 10:24-26). Like Moses did, don’t listen to Pharaoh (the devil) who wants you to serve, worship or thank God empty-handed, leaving behind your substance under his control. Like the children of Israel did, bring all your possessions before God in thanksgiving and let Him choose what He wants, how He wants it, and what He wants it for. That’s how to return to God thankfully.
PRAYER: As you give God thanks with your resources this season, you will never experience down time again in Jesus name.
